Immerse yourself in a wonderful Indonesian wayang kulit* experience with maestro dhalang Ki Joko Susilo accompanied by Adelaide’s Gamelan Sekar Laras. Entice your taste buds with authentic food from the Spice Islands.

Joko is an eighth-generation dhalang, hailing from Sragen in Central Java. He learnt from his father and gave his first all-night performance at the age of ten. Later he studied at the Indonesian Arts Academy in Surakarta and joined the staff of the puppetry department there. He received his PhD in ethnomusicology in 2000 from the University of Otago, New Zealand, where he now teaches and performs.

Gamelan Sekar Laras is Adelaide’s oldest gamelan group based at the stunning Flinders University Pendopo. This is their seventh performance with Ki Joko Susilo.

Ticket price includes a three-course Indonesian meal, a one-hour wayang performance plus a free drink on arrival and a brief tour of the Art Gallery’s special Balinese Exhibition with curator James Bennett.

Part proceeds from ticket sales and the auction of beautiful Indonesian art go to support Indofest, Adelaide’s much-loved festival of all things Indonesian.

So come prepared to bid for some great auction items on the night!

*Wayang kulit is a traditional puppet play led by the dhalang, or puppet master and storyteller, and found in the culture of Java, Bali and Lombok, Indonesia.
